Clinker silo steel structure – Case Study
Project scope:
The erection of steel structures on a clinker silo such as the ring beam, rafter frames, penthouse, and conveyor galleries.
Equipment used:
Liebherr 110t mobile crane, Liebherr 250t mobile crane, Liebherr 450t mobile crane, Kobelco 250t crawler crane, IHI CCH2500 – 250t crawler crane, Demag 650t crawler crane.
Load details:
Penthouse assembly (150t), Ring beam assembly (70t), Rafter assembly (25t), Conveyor Gallery (48t)
Project execution:
A 650t crane was rigged up and lifted the ring beam assembly above the silo. Stay cables were used to secure the ring beam at 44m. Two 250t cranes are used to connect the rafter assembly (25t each). Once the rafters have been assembled, the silo's load is gradually released.
The entire penthouse set (150t) of dimensions (15m x 15m x 22m) is lifted and placed on top of the ring beam with a rafter.
As per the scope we initially lifted the 40m long conveyor in tandem with 450t and 250t cranes and erected it over the existing column and silo.
Challenges of the project:
The main crane had to hold the ring beam above the silo for 15 days. During these days, the rafters and purlins were installed, increasing the load from 70t to 135 tons.
The rigging arrangement of the penthouse assembly was designed to lift the load with minimal stress on the steel structure. Detailed load analysis was done, and counterweights were added to the structure to ensure the COG of the load remained at the centre of the structure.
Since the site is near a mountain, the wind speed created a tunnel effect, and the load surface area is also large, we had to calculate the permissible wind speed.
To complete the project, a complex rigging system was created.

Al Faris recently installed a Steam Box at a new Waste to Energy Plant in Dubai.
Due to Industry reputation and expertise involving high complexity in planning and execution, Al Faris were
recently awarded this project.
This challenging installation was done at a height of 2.8m using our specialized in-house modular towers
and other skidding equipment.
The Steam Box was delivered in two parts, the bottom part weighing 27t and the top part weighing 40t.
The top part was tandem lifted for top and tail operation using our 250t and 200t mobile cranes. It was
then placed onto skid tracks and skidded into a temporary position. Thereafter the bottom part was placed
on the skid tracks. The top part was then lifted in order to allow the bottom to be skidded underneath. Once
the bottom part was skidded into final position, the top part was lowered onto the bottom part and both
parts of the Steam Box were joined together for final installation.
Challenges:
The clearance while skidding was only 30mm. All measurements and markings were done precisely during
the operation.
The COG of the top part of the steam box was away from both the lifting points during the lifting of the load
from the trailer which could have caused the load to slide. In order to avoid this situation, we made a
temporary packing arrangement of stools at the corner of the steam box.
A project of this nature requires exceptionally detailed planning to orchestrate the complex activities
necessary for ensuring uninterrupted safe services; from detailed planning to ensuring utmost safety
during all lifts. The technical support documentation, execution plans and HSE protocols were prepared
in-house and discussed with the client prior to project execution.

Al Faris Group executed the complete logistics chain for 30 overflow tanks at Dubai Solar Park!
Al Faris Group has executed the complete logistics chain including receiving, storing, transporting and lifting of 30 overflow tanks which are part of the ongoing Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park project, the largest single-site solar park in the world!
Due to Industry reputation and expertise in transporting large, abnormal loads involving high complexity in planning and execution, Al Faris were recently awarded this project.
Each tank was 52m long and weighed 235t which made it an extremely big challenge for byroad transportation. The biggest challenge was to find a feasible route from Jebel Ali Port to Solar park, Al Qudra in order to transport the cargo efficiently.
The transportation was carried out with our Mercedes Arocs trucks attached to 2 files 30 axle Goldhofer THP/SL conventional hydraulic trailers with 2 tanks in one convoy. At the project site, the overflow tanks were lifted using our Liebherr 400t crawler crane along with other supporting mobile cranes which travelled a distance of more than 100m before placing the load on the foundation.
A project of this nature requires exceptionally detailed planning to orchestrate the complex activities necessary for ensuring uninterrupted safe services; from route analysis to on-road safety permissions. The route was analyzed and surveyed by our technical team. The technical support documentation, execution plans, route analysis report and HSE protocols were prepared in-house and discussed with the client prior to project execution.

AL FARIS transport one of the biggest and heaviest buoy in the world!
Due to Industry reputation and expertise in transporting large, abnormal loads involving high complexity in planning and execution, Al Faris were recently awarded the project of loading and transporting a turret type buoy.
The buoy weighing 455t with a 18.3m diameter and 16m height is the biggest and heaviest turret type buoy to be transported on road. The load was transported using 4 files of 16 axles Goldhofer SPMT (self-propelled modular transporter) and was loaded by the self-jacking system of the trailer.
The biggest challenge during transportation was maneuvering the SPMT with the load in narrow routes, bottle necks and sharp turns. In addition, significant diversions and managing temporary traffic routes were also a requirement in order to carry out this project successfully. Our team of engineers and technicians carried out the operation smoothly with utmost safety and efficiency.

AL FARIS support delivery of the Route 2020 Project - the metro extension for Expo 2020 Dubai site.
Having previously worked on the Dubai Metro Lines, Al Faris was awarded the job of loading, transporting and lifting the heaviest precast Girders of the Route 2020 which is often referred to as the “Journey into the Future” after Dubai’s award of the Expo 2020.
‘A project of this nature with multiple jobs requires detailed planning and optimized utilization of equipment for a successful execution which is all done in-house by our competent engineers and technicians’ says Kieve Pinto, Al Faris Executive Director.
After careful calculations and analysis, it was decided to use a Gantry System for lifting the Girders due to confined space restrictions for tandem crane lift set-up and extra logistics cost of transportation.
At first the Precast Girders weighing 426t were loaded using our SBL900 Gantry system on our Goldhofer 19 axle THP/SL multi axle trailer connected to a 680 HP Heavy Duty Prime Mover. The Gantry was set-up using our Liebherr 100t All Terrain Crane and Forklift.
The Precast Girders were then lifted and erected on the metro column safely by our 650t crawler crane with SSL2 configuration and 42m main boom. Our team of Engineers, Heavy lift managers and Supervisors were all present on site to ensure a safe and optimum lift with great efficiency. The transportation and lifting activity took place at night in order to avoid busy road traffic and other obstacles.
We are proud to contribute to and fulfill Dubai’s mission of connectivity.
Our 2 x 13 axle Goldhofer modular trailer + 6 axle spacer frame transported a 125T cold box form RAK, UAE to Sohar, Oman. The 235km (approx. 5 days) long route was investigated and surveyed by our technical team.
Our competent team overcame challenges like narrow routes, bottle necks, rough weather conditions etc. to successfully complete the project with appreciation and recognition from our client.

Al Faris was recently awarded a project at a power plant in Dubai. The project included 12 heavy lifts of various sized power plant equipment, the largest weighing 404T which were to be lifted in confined spaces between structures.
After careful consideration and calculations, the Liebherr LR 11000 lattice boom crawler crane was considered the most suitable to safely carry out the heavy lifts. The cranes strength and capacity along with its various boom configurations makes it the most ideal and efficient crane for demanding heavy lifts at heights.
Execution was planned and carried out by our trained operators. All technical support documentation, execution plans and schedules were prepared in-house that helped organize all activities from beginning to end; this allowed for minim delays and ultimately safely lifting the generators in confined spaces. We also provided a strong commitment and focus to adhere to best HSE practices on site which was discussed in detail with the client prior to the commencement of any operation.
Prior to the final lift, the crane was assembled with the required ballast weight and slinged with the heavy duty webbing belts planned to be used and detailed in the lifting plan. Our competent team of Planning engineers, Heavy lift managers and Supervisor were all present on site to ensure a safe and undisturbed lift with great efficiency.
The big powerhouse - Our 1000T crawler crane was used with SDWB2 configuration (main boom – 48.0m, luffer – 30.0m) while lifting the 404T generator which was one of our most impressive heavy lifts by a single crane.
The entire execution included lifting of the generator from the hydraulic trailer and maneuvering the crane with the load towards the foundation which was approx. 10m distance away to achieve the planned radius. The load was then hoisted to a height of 30m and rotated over a high rise steel structure and slowly lowered to approx. 15m within the narrow space between the steel structures to the foundation level. The final alignment of the load was done by coordinating with the installation team. A similar lifting procedure was followed to safely lift the remaining 11 equipment.
Overall the client was very satisfied with the project execution and plan.

We are excited to introduce our newly designed enhanced company logo as part of the on-going evolution of our company’s brand.
Our business has grown and evolved over the last 26 years, and we felt it was time to refresh. We have enhanced our logo to reflect who we are today and to symbolize our dynamic future with commitment to the industry and our customers.
After many months of planning, designing, scrapping and reimagining, we settled on a logo that celebrates our heritage and history. Our new logo retains our core element; our dynamic horse representing the Arabic meaning of Al Faris which means a Horseman / Knight.
Al Faris will use one single logo for all our business segments and our branches. We will very slowly and gradually update the new logo on all our marketing collaterals and to help reduce waste we will be using existing material while stocks last. All our current heavy equipment will still hold our old logo.

We know that achievement and success aren’t by accident. At your career milestone, we honor your commitment to excellence!
Gilroy recalls joining Al Faris on 3rd December, 1992 and clearly remembers his first day at work. Al Faris at that point was only a start up with a few equipment.
Started as an operation coordinator to receive calls from clients and dispatch equipment, Gilroy progressively acquired increased technical skills and responsibilities resulting in several promotions, to the point where he was given an opportunity to set-up and handle Jebel Ali operations. With his dedication and enthusiasm to grow the business further, today the operation has a strong hold in Jebel Ali port with a large client base.
Gilroy states that over the last few years he has not only seen the company grow to great heights but has also personally gained more confidence in himself and capabilities. He values the effort put in by his team and takes immense pride in the growth of his branch.
‘My most memorable experience was my visit to Liebherr factory in Germany to see the manufacture of cranes’, says Gilroy. Completing 25 years with Al Faris along with his growth, is indeed his greatest milestone achieved which will be cherished forever.
